World Series is Learning Curve for Sergi with New Car
Sergi Scores a Top-10 Finish Against Stiff Super Late Model Speedweeks Compeition
The World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna Speedway always draws some of the most competitive fields of the year in the Super Late Model division. This year, Anthony Sergi and his No. 20 team even brought out a new car for the event. Unfortunately there were still a few bugs to be worked out of the new ride.
"We started out the week with our backup car and knew we might not be contending for the wins," said Sergi. "We didn't know what was really going on with the backup car. But we went out there with the backup car and we finished 12th our first night. I wasn't really happy about that. We went out the second night and finished eighth, and I was really happy about it. It just seemed like all week I could get the car really good for the short runs, when everybody was in a pack right there on the restarts. But when everybody got spread apart they would just blow on by me."
"We got the new car out on Tuesday and practiced it a little," said Sergi. "The car was alright but after that we just couldn't get the car down on the track at all. It just felt like it was skating on top of the track so we're going to bring it back to the shop and work on it and just regroup and come back out here again and hopefully get a win as the season goes on here at New Smyrna."
Overall, Sergi was pleased with his World Series experience knowing that many teams left with their cars in less than perfect shape.
"I'm leaving here happy that my car is not like Ryan Moore's car (which was crashed last in the World Series finale) at the end of the night," said Sergi. "I feel really bad for him but I have a starting point now. We've raced for seven nights, I've kept the car clean for seven nights. The owner doesn't see it yet but hopefully we can show him that we've got this going on right now."
For Sergi, a late-race spin in the Bruce Gowland Memorial 100 at the end of the week described perfectly the teams struggles throughout the event.
"We had really tough competition this week," explained Sergi. "I mean all week we were a tenth off the leader and the pack was really close. We had a really good car some nights and some nights we didn't. But it really finished off my week when I was coming around turn one and two backwards at the end of the week, that's how my whole week felt."
Next up for Sergi will be the next Bright House Challenge Series Super Late Model 100-lap event at Desoto Super Speedway.
