Sergi Scores a Surprising Top Five at New Smyrna
Finishes Fifth in Marion Edwards Memorial 100 in a Back Up Car
Anthony Sergi was getting his car set up on Friday night for Saturday’s Marion Edwards Memorial 100 at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Things were going fine until the rear end broke and his team had to pull out the backup car.
They returned to New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday night to record a fifth place finish in the Bright House Challenge Series event.
“It is surprising to finish fifth after the rear end broke on our primary car on Friday night,” Sergi recalled. “We got out our backup car that we normally run on shorter tracks, put in our setup that we had from Speedweeks. It was a loose in practice and we qualified 11th.
“Thankfully Daniel Keene (fast qualifier) drew an 11 and we started on the pole for the race. We got up to fourth and were running third for about a quarter of the race. We had one bad restart to where we fell back to seventh, but was able to get back up to fifth by the finish of the race.”
Sergi was pleased with his finish.
“Overall, a fifth place finish is like a win for us,” Sergi explained. “It was a good night with the backup car, especially with what we had to do to get ready for the race.”
Sergi’s next race will be the Bright House Challenge Series season finale at Desoto Speedway in Bradenton, Florida on Saturday, October 25th.
