Sergi Leads Early Before Finishing Eighth at Desoto
Oviedo High School Senior Records Fifth Top-10 Finish of 2014
On May 23, Oviedo High School senior Anthony Sergi will walk across the stage at UCF Arena to accept his high school diploma. Before he does that, Sergi had business to take care of on the racetrack during the Bright House Challenge Series event held at Desoto Speedway (FL) on Saturday.
The Oviedo, Florida driver had a strong showing throughout the day on Saturday and ended the day by crossing the finish line in the eighth position.
Starting from the pole position after a pre-race redraw, Sergi led a number of laps early before struggling on a few early race restarts. Battling a tight race car, the 18-year-old driver fell backwards in the middle stages of the race.
“We qualified sixth and had a real good car at that time,” said Sergi. “We led about fifteen laps and then I messed up on the restarts. I let (George) Gorham get around me and then I fell back from then on out.
“We had a real good car, probably a sixth place car, but I couldn’t get back up in front of Shelnut to try to make a run at a top-five.”
Overall, Sergi was pleased with his day at the race track but said after the race that he was hoping for a better result. He believes that he and his team can take what they learned on Saturday and come back even stronger the next time they race at Desoto Speedway.
“It wasn’t a bad night but it wasn’t a good night,” said Sergi. “It wasn’t what I expected. Hopefully next time we can come here and get the car set up so that it’s good to go and make it a little bit looser for the race.”
Next up for Sergi will be the Clyde Hart Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway on Thursday, July 3.
