Seventeen-year-old Anthony Sergi was looking at the Red-Eye 100, the first official race of the 2013 racing season, as a good testament to what the balance of the year could potentially be like. For the Oveido, Florida driver, New Smyrna Speedway’s first of three early-season Triple Crown races would also be a good test for Sergi as he embarks on a Super Late Model-only schedule for 2013.
Unfortunately the gremlins that plagued Sergi’s
MJS Concrete No. 20 machine for much of the
2012 season crept back in for the Red-Eye 100
Saturday night. On the flip-side, a solid sixth-
place result was a silver lining that can hopefully
be a catalyst to better results to come in 2013.
“When we started the race, the car was good,”
said Sergi, who started the 100-lap affair in 13th
position. “At the end it was just too tight. We
are not sure what is wrong, but there is
something wrong or off with the car. We'll just go back to square one I think after this.”
While Sergi had higher hopes for his start to the 2013 season, there is still a lot of racing to do. He will be sticking primarily to Super Late Model racing in Florida and beyond in the new season, so having a focus like never before can mean better things as the calendar moves on.
“It's not a great way to start the season, but it's all in one piece,” added Sergi. “Hopefully we can learn from this and go forward. We won't have to be jumping back and forth anymore with the Pro Late Models and the Super Late Models. We have switched all our stuff to Super Late Models and that's where we will be doing our racing in 2013.”
Sergi’s next event will be the Pete Orr Memorial Orange Blossom Special, the second round of the FASCAR Triple Crown, on January 19 at New Smyrna Speedway.
