Rough Outing at the Cracker 200 for Anthony Sergi
Hard Crash Knocks Sergi out of contention for the win
The return of New Smyrna Speedway’s Cracker 200 was an event that 17-year-old Anthony Sergi was hoping to make his mark early in the 2013 season. The Oveido, Florida driver was hoping to set the tone for the rest of the 2013 racing season for himself as well as his Anthony Sergi Racing team.
After qualifying ninth fastest, he would start the 200-lap main from the inside of the fifth row. He stayed in the top 10 throughout the early going of the extra length event, but the race changed for the No. 20 MJS Concrete entry on lap 22 when Sergi slammed the turn four wall before coming to rest just past the start/finish line.
“First couple of laps, we’re just trying to take it
easy, I wasn’t really pushing it at all,” said Sergi.
“Something started to feel funny in the car. It
felt like the brakes were going out. On that lap
where we crashed, I got on the gas and the car
just hooked straight into the wall. Nothing I
could do.”
The next race for Sergi and crew will be back at the half-mile New Smyrna Speedway for a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series show with his Super Late Model.
