It’s not very often that you hear about a 100-lap late model race being run in truly just 100 laps, but that’s what happened this weekend at New Smyrna Speedway in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.
After the post-qualifying invert, Anthony
Sergi started on the pole, but was forced to
run his machine harder than he wanted.
Still, he held on to bring home a solid
top-five finish for his Oviedo, Florida team.
“I qualified sixth and had a really good car,”
said Sergi. “With the inversion we got the
pole but I was kind of messed up because I
had to really give it all I had at the beginning
of the race and by the end I didn’t really have
the car to stay up front. So I got passed and
just finished fifth with that long green flag
run the whole race.”
For a driver who had never run 100-laps green in that nature before, Sergi was thankful it was at New Smyrna Speedway instead of some of the other venues he’s visited this year.
“I didn’t really think it was that physically draining at New Smyrna,” said Sergi. “Because I think Pensacola is a lot harder track to drive on than New Smyrna is. You kind of stop it a little more at New Smyrna than you do at Pensacola. So it wasn’t easy, but it was alright.”
Next up for Sergi is a possible double-header this weekend at Orlando SpeedWorld on Friday night followed by the Billie Harvey Memorial at New Smyrna Speedway on Saturday.
“I don’t know what we’re doing yet,” said Sergi. “I don’t know if we’re going to run the Pro Late on Friday or if we’re going to go practice on Friday. We are definitely running the Super on Saturday back at New Smyrna though.”
The Billie Harvey Memorial 100 at New Smyrna Speedway will roll off at 7:30 pm on Saturday April 14, 2012.
