After running at New Smyrna Speedway and beyond all 2012 season long, Anthony Sergi had high hopes for the season-ending Governor’s Cup 200 at his home track of New Smyrna. The event annually attracts some of the best Super
Late Model competition in the country, but
Sergi was out to defend his turf with hopes
of finishing off the 2012 season with strong
results in the Pro Late Model and Super
Late Model portions of the event.
Sergi’s Governor’s Cup weekend followed
a trend that he battled with all season long,
however. The MJS Concrete No. 20s were
fast, but a series of bad luck kept both cars
from showing their potential. Sergi finished
a hard-fought seventh in the Pro Model
event on Friday night, then wrapped up his
2012 season with a 12th-place run in the
Super Late Model all-star event on Saturday.
“We were good on Monday when we came out here to shake it down and to get used to the setup,” said Sergi. “Then we came out here Thursday and we were decent. We weren’t as good as some of the top guys, but we would’ve been mid-pack. Friday, we went out to practice and I got into some oil or something and spun it around and tore off the rear clip (of the Super Late Model). (Saturday), we got here early and pulled over the clip. That car just was never the same. I think something’s broken or a locker is broken in the rear end.
“It just wasn’t a good night at all. I’m going to tear down the cars since this is my last race of the season and try to regroup for next season.”
With the 2012 season in the record books, Sergi is ready to shift focus to a rebound in 2013.
“It was another rough year,” said Sergi. “We’ve had so many crew chief swaps and I have to settle down with one guy and find out what’s going on.”
