Sergi Gets Top Five At New Smyrna
Back To The Beach Again This Weekend
Anthony Sergi wants a win in Super Late Model competition, but knows that the old racing adage is true; “To finish first, you must first finish.”

After a string of hard luck Super Late Model starts on the Gulf Coast, Sergi returned to the friendly confines of New Smyrna Speedway (FL) and the Bright House Networks Challenge Series.  A solid night and top five finish was just what the doctor ordered for Sergi.

“We started out the day a little on the loose side, but we knew it would tighten up at night,” said Sergi.  “We got up to third at one point and just wanted to ride and save my tires, which is something I learned from racing at Pensacola. Anthony Campi and David Rogers got by me, but all in all it was a good night.”
Though he couldn’t get the win, Sergi said he learned quite a bit running behind veteran David Rogers for the majority of the race. Rogers ran a unique line around New Smyrna, and Sergi said he will try it soon.

“It looked like he was tight,” said Sergi. “He was kind of “diamonding” the corner, going in low, and letting drift up, then back to the bottom.  He would pull me down the straightaway every time. I tried to run it, but we didn’t have the car to do it.”

Sergi had spent the last few weeks running Pro Late Models, and was a little taken back, with the extra horsepower is his Super.

“We practiced on Friday, and I forgot all about that extra horsepower, Sergi said. “Running a Pro and Super is entirely different. In a Super, you can run hard in to the corner, almost stop, and get up off good with the extra motor. In a Pro, it’s all about momentum and carrying it through the corner.”

Sergi will return to the high-banks of New Smyrna this weekend for a Pro Late Model 100 lapper on Saturday, July 21st.
