Anthony Sergi Earns 2013 New Smyrna Rookie of the Year Title
Sergi Finishes Third in Regular-Season Finale
The final NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points race for Super Late Models was on September 14th at New Smyrna Speedway as Anthony Sergi was fighting tooth and nail, still holding on to a chance of clinching the 2013 Track Championship.
After starting 10th in the Season Championship Feature, the 18-year-old clawed his way to a third place finish when the checkered flag fell. When a car that finished in front of him was disqualified in post-tech, that moved the Oviedo, Florida driver to second in the rundown. That finish secured a runner-up spot in the final point standings and locked up the track's Rookie of the Year title.
"We drove to the front as fast as we could as it went green to checkered and got second after the DQ," said Sergi. "I'm very happy we were able to get the Rookie title. It's a nice reward for how hard our team has worked this season."
The 'post-season' starts for Sergi at New Smyrna on Saturday, September 28th with a return trip to the half-mile as the Super Late Models will join the TBARA Winged Sprint Cars in preparation for the Marion Edwards Memorial 100 the following weekend.
