Anthony Sergi Seeks a Big Year After Strange Opening Weekend
Odd Night Leads to Some Disappoint Finishes
There will be other days for Anthony Sergi to make 2012 a strong season. Things just didn’t go his way on opening night of the new season at New Smyrna, but there’s plenty of hope and confidence on a strong year going forward.
The youngster from Florida wanted to start things out on a good note at the 2012 Red-Eye 100, but a broken rear end left him scrambling to get things together to make the show with his MJS Concrete Super Late Model. Sergi may be a youngster, but he got down and dirty with the rest of his crew to make sure their car made the grid for the first race of the season.
“We broke the rear end today during practice so we had to change it out before the race,” said Sergi. “We didn’t get to make a qualifying lap so we started on the rear of the field. We started the car off a little tight, but that’s the way I like it. We knew that would take a few laps to come in. The car didn’t come on strong like I would have liked. I thought there was something wrong and we got black-flagged for leaking fluid so that was the end of our night in the Super Late Model.”
After being parked for the night with problems they still managed to score a 15th-place finish.
“It was a bad way to start with the rear end problem, but we got back out there to run and my crew guys and I had to wake up from the off-season we had.”
In the Pro Late Model race it was like a broken record as Sergi started the race towards the back, but managed to pull up through the field for a top-five run a fourth-place finish.
“We got up to fourth in the Pro Late Model race and were kind of stuck there,” said Sergi. “Overall not a bad night, but we can and will work on getting better. “
Sergi will get back after it in February with Smyrna Speedweeks and the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. Plans are to run both the Pro Late Model and the Super Late Model for all the events.
