Sergi Geared For Red Eye This Weekend
Improved Spec Engines, Strong Run in Last Race of 2011 Brings Hope for First of 2012
At a time of the year when most race teams across the country are still busy flipping their calendars forward to 2012, Anthony Sergi will be instead flipping the ignition switch on his late model to take the track for the Red Eye 100 at New Smyrna Speedway. The 16-year-old gained a lot of seat time and impressive finishes in the Florida United Promoters Late Model Series in 2011, his first full season of heavy late model action.

Building upon the ’11 foundation, Sergi will be one of the young Florida shoes to watch in 2012.  He couldn’t be more eager to showcase how much of a force he and his team will be than possibly winning the first time out this season.

Sergi has extra reason to look forward to the 100-lapper this weekend. His last race of 2011 came in the Florida Governor’s Cup race at the same track, an event in which he finished sixth against some of the best drivers Florida has to offer.

“I have a lot of confidence,” Sergi said when asked about his chances this weekend. “In the Governor’s Cup, we had a brake cap that came off of the brake reservoir. We had a really good car and I think we could have been up a bit more had it not been for the brake issue. But we still beat a lot of good cars.”

Sergi also comes to the track armed with a bit of a Christmas present from the tech shed.  Off-season tweaks to the Florida Spec Super Late Model Sealed Engine Program should help level the playing field in Florida this year and help give his spec program a boost.

“We have a lot of new rules out with these new motors. I have a Florida Spec motor so we’ll see how it’ll run with the new restrictions on the motor. Right now, we’re been testing it out, so we’ll see how we do this weekend.”

The Red Eye 100 will be contested Saturday, January 7th at New Smyrna Speedway with the feature to be held at 7:30 PM. You can learn about attending the event by going to newsmyrnaspeedway.org or by following the action on Speed51.com.
