Bad Luck Plauges Sergi On Gulf Coast
Crash And Mechanical Issues Ruin Weekend
Anthony Sergi’s Gulf Coast bad luck streak continued in rounds seven and eight of the Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship.
Sergi time trialed 21st on Friday night at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. He rode inside the top 20 when a lap 59 incident with Wayne Niedecken, Jr. and Mike Garvey ended his night.
“The track tightened up quite a bit, and we were looking for a caution,” said Sergi. “Unfortunately, I guess he (Niedecken) really wanted to get around me. He bumped me in the left rear and took me out. I tried to get out of the way, but rolled up the hill. Mike Garvey locked up his brakes and slid into us.
Saturday’s race at Mobile International Speedway showed promise. Sergi worked his way inside the top 10 just prior to halfway. After making a pit stop for adjustments, the car’s battery died. The team was able to push the car off, but the battery and motor died for good at lap 92, leaving Sergi with a 16th place finish.
“I think there has been a black cloud over me for a while now,” Sergi said. “It started mid-year last year, and it seems that something always happens. Either I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time or something stupid breaks. We have excellent race cars, I just can’t catch a break.”
Sergi will return to action this Saturday night at New Smyrna Speedway in a Pro Late Model 100. Sergi, a former winner at New Smyrna, said he was confident anytime he rolls in to the fast half mile.
“I have raced down there for a long time, and I know how to race those guys and we usually run well,” Sergi said.
