Anthony Sergi’s main goal for the 46th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing was to complete laps and get experience. Night-by-night at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway, he accomplished this goal.
Sergi racked up top-five and top-10 finishes and was in line for a shot at the Pro Late Model Smyrna Speedweeks Championship. During the final event on February 25th, Sergi saw his title hopes vanish on a restart tangle-up that left the No. 20 MJS Concrete machine in the wall. Sergi would end up third in the final points after an eighth-place run.
"We had a good car for the 50 lap finale,” said Sergi. "We got all the way up to third before halfway. The 25 (Cole Powell) got jacked up on a restart and we had nowhere to go. I guess it's racing.”
Sergi had worked his way to the leaders in the final event and at one point in the race he would have been the champion if the event had ended. Despite the damage, Sergi and his Anthony Sergi Racing team learned a bunch for the season.
"We might have been a little down on horsepower as these guys can really get up off the corner and down the straight-aways," explained Sergi. “Thursday's rain was a big deal for us because we got things figured out with the Pro Late Model and we were much better the final few nights."
Sergi also ran all the Super Late Model events and got lots of seat time in preparation for a more aggressive Super Late Model schedule. The Super Late Model was a struggle at first as the team had to keep the car running after mechanical problems.
"We broke the trailing arm brackets and had some other mechanical problems," said Sergi. "We had a spin and when you have these problems it's hard to gain on the car when you are fixing it."
Between the two divisions Sergi logged nine top-10 finishes, three in the top five.
"We want to be up front more, but it is what it is and I am getting more seat time. That's why we are here this week to get laps and prepare for this season. All the top 10's and top five's are just an added bonus right now."
Next week Anthony Sergi will be back in action when the Florida United Promoters Late Model Series kicks off their 2012 season at Desoto Super Speedway (FL). The 100-lap race, commonly known as the Icebreaker 100, will be Sergi's first start away from New Smyrna in 2012.
