Sergi Records Pair of Top Fives on Busy Weekend

Florida Driver Has Up and Down Weekend

It may only be January, but Anthony Sergi’s racing season is already heating up.  This past weekend, the Florida native competed in a total of four races at two different race tracks.  His busy weekend, which began Saturday at New Smyrna Speedway, ended on Sunday afternoon at Auburndale Speedway with a pair of strong top-five finishes in the Sunoco Challenge Series Triple 50s.

Despite the strong runs at Auburndale, Sergi’s nights didn’t end the way he would have liked it to on either day.  In both events he was caught up in racing incidents that ended his race early.  With two top-five finishes and two banged up race cars, Sergi’s weekend was certainly a rollercoaster ride.

“The car was pretty good,” Sergi said on Sunday.  “We didn’t have anything really for the 30 (eventual winner Jesse Dutilly), but I feel like we had a second-place car.  We kind of ran into some bad luck and have a wrecked race car for no reason.  Overall it was a tough weekend for us.  We had a second-place finish and a fifth-place finish, but I feel like we should have had another second-place finish as well.”

Sergi used a strong qualifying run on Sunday to start the first of three 50-lap features from the outside pole position.  He battled with Dutilly for a number of laps before eventually settling for the runner-up spot.

The second race of the day saw Sergi charge from the rear of the field to a fifth-place finish before eventually being involved in a crash during the final race of the day.

On Saturday night, Sergi finished 16th in the Orange Blossom 100 after being involved in an early incident while trying to make his way through the field from the 13th starting spot.

“I messed up in qualifying and didn’t get the tires hot enough,” Sergi admitted about his qualifying run. “I’m not really used to the cold weather here in Florida, I’m used to going out and just going at it.  The tires were cold so I didn’t really get it going.  Started in the back, not where you really want to be, and got bundled up with slower cars.  I just got the short end of the stick in a racing incident.”

Sergi’s 2016 racing campaign will continue on Saturday, February 6 when he visits Desoto Speedway (FL) for the Randy Fox Memorial 104.
