Sergi Brings Home Top Five from NSS Red-Eye 100
NSS Triple Crown Kicks off with a Solid Run for
Sergi with Help from VanDoorns
After starting sixth in Saturday night’s Red-Eye 100 at New Smyrna Speedway, Anthony Sergi battled back from challenging restarts all night to bring his No. 20 Super Late Model home in the fifth position.

“It was a really weird night,” said Sergi.  “We started fifth and just had bad luck getting those inside line restarts.  You really can’t do anything from the inside on the restarts but hopefully get a hole and get up and start passing people again.

“The track is really temperamental about your line and I just couldn’t get the outside line to run on the restart,” explained Sergi.  “I got the outside line on that last restart and they all went crazy right there.  So I don’t know what was going on but they were crazy up front.  They were acting like they’ve been off for two months, definitely.”

Following a top-five finish to kick off the 2014 season, Sergi was grateful for a few new faces in his pit area that have helped to turn the Sergi Racing team around.

“The car has been really good,” said Sergi.  “I can’t thank Johnny VanDoorn and Butch VanDoorn enough for coming down.  They did a great job and hopefully we can get them at the Pete Orr.”

After recently stepping out on their own, brothers Johnny and Butch VanDoorn have found a good customer in Sergi.

“We bought a brand new Port City (chassis) for the Governor’s Cup and Butch set it up and it was awesome,” said Sergi.  “We called him back for the Red-Eye and he was awesome again.  He’s one of the smartest guys in the nation and I can’t thank him enough for coming out here and helping me out.  He’s getting his new business out and hopefully we can buy one of his new chassis and get moving from there on.”

For Sergi, the second half of the season will be a little different than in years past as the Florida-native and high school senior will head off to college in the Fall.

“We’re really going at it for the first half of this year,” said Sergi.  “I’ve got college starting in the fall next year.  I applied to the University of Florida and UCF (University of Central Florida), I’ll find out in February if I’m going or not.”

And although the college transition is fast approaching, Sergi is still focused on making his time count until then.

“But other than that I just want to hit this year hard and show them what I’ve got and then we’re going to take it easy from there on out and just race a couple races here and there and hopefully we have a good year this year.  I’m hoping to get to some Southern Super Series races as well.”
